I started writing this poem a few years ago and only got half way through. It stood for a long time needing to be finished, needing a resolution to the monster problem. Last Saturday before I preached at Thurston Community Baptist Church, I sat down and finished the poem and gave it a fitting ending.<\/p>\n

I have a monster who lives in my basement, I know!<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n He\u2019s been there for about 35 years or so.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n He has 4 eyes a giant nose and a huge appetite,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n He eats so much food I have to feed him 3 times every night!<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n \f<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n I do my best to keep him hidden away,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n If my friends saw him I don\u2019t know what they\u2019d say.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n The problem is that he\u2019s getting bigger all the time,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n Last week he gained about 30 pounds, not counting the slime!<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n \f<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n And when he gets mad you wouldn\u2019t believe the nasty scent<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n which comes up through the chimney and then through the vent.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n Once he popped his gnarly head out the door,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n I had to convince my neighbor it was a shadow and nothing more.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n \f<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n Years ago he was tiny little thing<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n Who hardly ate more than a chicken wing.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n It wasn\u2019t much to keep him fed,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n At night he didn\u2019t even get me out of bed.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n I thought, \u201cNow, this is not so bad,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n As long as I give him a little food, he\u2019s glad.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n No one can fault me if I keep this monster a little longer,<\/span><\/i>\f<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n I\u2019ll be sure to get rid of him before he gets bigger and stronger.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n I kept saying that to myself every day of every week<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n But something kept me from getting rid of that freak.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n \f<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n At first it was fun to have him around:<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n When I played with him he\u2019d make this cute little sound.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n \u201cI can give you just a few more minutes,\u201d I\u2019d say<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n \u201cThen I\u2019ll have to go and get on with my day.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n We\u2019d meet regularly for 15 mins or more,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n Then it was an hour sometimes three or even four.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n \f<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n Now I spend almost all my time with that thief<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n And he throws giant fits when I don\u2019t bring him roast beef!<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n I\u2019m tired my poor bones just ache<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n But I can\u2019t stop now because I know what\u2019s at stake!<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n If I let him out he\u2019ll run all over town<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n Spreading his terrible stink around.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n Then I figured what would be best:<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n I\u2019d slaughter that beast and finally get some rest.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n I tiptoed down the stairs quiet as can be<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n Only to find him waiting for me!<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n \f<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n \u201cYou can\u2019t kill me,\u201d he said with a sneer.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n \u201cJust try and I\u2019ll prove that it\u2019s quite impossible, my dear.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n I raised the knife into the air with a start<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n Then brought it down swiftly into the old monster\u2019s heart.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n He looked at me strangely with eyes all aglow<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n Then said, \u201cFool, there\u2019s something you should know.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n My heart and your heart are one and the same,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n You can\u2019t kill me because you\u2019re really the one to blame!\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n \f<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n The truth is I couldn\u2019t remidy my situation<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n Surely this monster would bring my damnation<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n I hung my head low and my knees hit the floor<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n When suddenly I heard a knock at the door<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n Not now I thought with grief and dispair <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n Someone will know about this ugly affair<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n Up the stairs I labored, each step a chore<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n But finally I made it to that horred door<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n My heart struck a beat of irregular meter<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n My hands began to sweat and my legs to teeter<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n I paused for a moment as I grabbed the knob<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n Should I try to hide that beastly blob?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n No, it was quite impossible now<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n Even the basement couldn\u2019t contain that ugly cow.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n I knew I was done, I wanted no more<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n So I gathered my courage and opened that door!<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n \f<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n Shafts of light filled my home as the door swung wide<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n It was so blinding I almost thought I had died<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n I squinted and blinked to see who was there<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n When out of the brightness a pare of eyes met my stare<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n Kind and compassionate, yet filled with sorrow<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n \u201cMay I come in\u201d he asked, \u201cor should I return tomorrow?\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n \u201cNo, come in now, you\u2019re very needed!\u201d <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n \u201cCould you help me kill a monster?\u201d I pleaded<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n \u201cWhy I thought \u00a0you\u2019d never ask\u201d he said with relief<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ll do it right now, I\u2019ll get rid of that thief\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n \f<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n \u201cWait\u201d I cried, \u201cthat monster has made me poor as dust\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s ok my son, I require nothing but your trust!\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n He marched right down there and removed that brute<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n
