During my\u00a0high school\u00a0years I used to do some work for an older lady who loved to complain. What did she complain about? She had the terrible skill of turning almost anything that was wholesome and positive into a complaint. A typical conversation would go something like this:<\/p>\n

Me: “Good morning! Isn’t it a beautiful day?”<\/p>\n

Her: “It would have been if those birds didn’t start singing at 4:30 am and wake me up!”<\/p>\n

Me: “Oh well at least you got an early start to the day.”<\/p>\n

Her: “And now I’m so tired I’ll probably get nothing at all done today!”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

As you can imagine people didn’t really enjoy being around her. How did I manage? Honestly, I’m not really sure but I think it had something to do with the fact that I had the skill of keeping my mouth shut and just\u00a0getting\u00a0the work done.<\/p>\n

One thing I learned from that woman was that complainers like their complaints to be heard and they really like it when people respond to their complaints with phrases like “Poor you!” or “How terrible!” and even better “I can’t\u00a0believe\u00a0you have suffered so much!” \u00a0If you simply quit reacting to their complaints they’ll soon stop their grumbling or at least they’ll tone it down a bit.<\/p>\n

This week I’m teaching the book of Numbers in our Bible survey class. If you ever want to hear some good complainers that’s the book to go to! When the Israelites left Egypt they stopped being slaves and instead became full-time complainers!<\/p>\n
