All to often missionaries leave the field before their first term is over and others leave after the first term never to return. Recently our team of missionaries here in Odessa, Ukraine got together to evaluate the effectiveness of our ministries and make some strategic plans for the year.<\/p>\n<p>I asked our team to write out some advice for new missionaries. \u00a0What kind of things would they have wished they had known or were they glad they knew before they came.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the list they came up with. Some of the advice is specific to Ukraine or Eastern Europe but some of it is also broad enough that it could be useful anywhere in the world.<\/p>\n<p>These are in no particular\u00a0order.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Make learning the language a priority<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> <a title=\"Tips on Learning a Foreign Language\" href=\"https:\/\/sukofamily.org\/?p=1872\">(Check out my post on tips for learning a foreign language)<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t be afraid to sound like a 3-year old<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Be aware of culture shock<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Be aware of the influence of your own culture<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Expect change<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Take time to learn the culture<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Cheating is normal<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Bribes are expected<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Sometimes Ukrainians can be blunt<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Plan to start events late and to end events late<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Be patient with yourself and others<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t take all criticism personally<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Bring official documents with you to the field, i.e.-birth certificates\/marriage certificate\/diplomas<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Learn to be a good listener<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Learn to appreciate and accept your teammates<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t feel like you have to have an answer for every question (humility)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Keep your sense of humor<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>You don\u2019t have to respond and you shouldn&#8217;t respond to every request for help<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Be prepared to use public transport<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Dress warm<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Be prepared not to be in control of situations<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Be prepared to try foods you never thought you\u2019d try<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t look at the stray dogs<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Do everything you can to not walk in the mud\/keeping shoes clean is very important<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Door-to-door salesmen never give free stuff away.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Carry exact change<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4>\u00a0Question: What advice could you add to the list?<\/h4>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When is it most likely for a missionary to leave the field?
