I found myself a bit bogged after about 35 verses, so I decided to try something new.

I like to memorize while I walk to and from work, however, it is not always very convenient to hold the text in my hand. It can be hard to read while I’m walking and during the winter months it’s a bit clumsy with my gloves on.

I finally found a great solution to my problem. I recorded myself reading John chapter 1:1-51

john_1

Of course I could have downloaded audio from itunes of some “professional” reader but there are many benefits to listening to yourself read.

Recording yourself gives you the opportunity to think carefully about the pronunciation of every word

It helps you think through where to place the emphasis in each sentence.

It reveals any weak spots you might have in your speech.

It’s totally free and easy and fun to do.

Making your own recording is really quite easy to do. Most mobile phones have some sort of voice memo application which can be used to record your reading.

For iphone you can try:

Voice Memo or The Recorder App

For Android you might try:

Voice Recorder or Wave Recorder

You can also try a simple portable mp3 recorder like this Sony Digital Flash Voice Recorder I use the
Alesis PalmTrack Handheld Portable Digital Recorder which is great if you want a little higher quality sound.

Once you get your recording made make sure you load it on your favorite mp3 player or your smart phone. I suggest trying to listen to the passage at least 3 times a day, although it depends on how long your passage is.

The passage I’m working on is 51 verses and takes just over 6 minutes to listen to once. On my 25 minute walk to work I have just enough time to get through the passage 4 times.

You might also want to think about other times when you could listen. Below are a few suggestions to get you started.

You could listen to Scripture when:

Doing the dishes

Cleaning the house

Working out

Commuting

Walking

Eating your lunch

Riding on the bus

Waiting in line

Question: What other ways can you think of to use audio for Scripture memory?

Podcast: Play in new window | Download (12.0MB) | Embed

Subscribe: Email | RSS

God’s Word spoken is powerful, Scripture memorized and then spoken has twice the effect.
