If it is not important it\u00a0doesn&#8217;t\u00a0belong in the pulpit).<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h4>A time to complain about everyone else\u2019s faults in the church and outside of the church.<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h4>A mystical\/spiritual process that needs no preparation.<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h4>A political speech.<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h4>A passionate tirade about anything and everything (Let you passion be informed, biblical, prepared and logical).<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h4>A time to impress people with your ability to speak, tell stories or come up with unique interpretations (This is often a temptation, however, our goal should bes for people to see beyond us to Christ).<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h4>A step by step \u201cself help\u201d or \u201crecovery system\u201d.<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h4>A time to make people feel \u201cgood\u201d or \u201cbad\u201d about themselves.<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Preaching may include many of the elements I just mention above but when any of those factors becomes the driving force then you can know that it has drifted off course.<\/p>\n<p>What is preaching then?<\/p>\n<p>Here is my definition:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h4>Personal communication of God\u2019s Word that explains and applies truth to man\u2019s life.<\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>If you want a more detailed definition try Haddon W. Robinson&#8217;s definition of expository preaching.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h4>Expository preaching<\/h4>\n<h4>&#8211; the communication of a biblical concept, derived from and transmitted through<\/h4>\n<h4>a historical,<\/h4>\n<h4>grammatical,<\/h4>\n<h4>literary study of a passage in its context,<\/h4>\n<h4>which the Holy Spirit first applies<\/h4>\n<h4>to the personality and experience of the preacher, then through him to his hearers.<\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>By the way, Robinson&#8217;s book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B001N1FZIC\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=sukfam-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B001N1FZIC\">Biblical Preaching: The Development and Delivery of Expository Messages<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=sukfam-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B001N1FZIC\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/>\u00a0is hands down the most useful book I&#8217;ve found on the art of preaching.
